Matthew Denholm takes out five awards

 Matthew Denholm of The Australian, has won the Tasmanian MEDIA, ENTERTAINMENT & ARTS ALLIANCE Journalist of the Year Award for the second year in a row at the 2012 Tasmanian Media Ball in Hobart on Saturday night.

It was a remarkable night for Denholm after he took home five awards including Excellence in Print, Online & Wire Service Award, Comment, Analysis Opinion & Critique Award, Environmental Award, & Feature Writing Award.

Alliance’s Tasmanian president A.Mark Thomas said on Denholm’s achievement, “Matthew Denholm has once again proved himself at the state and national levels. Matt has won five awards at the 2012 Tasmanian media Awards demonstrating both the quality and breadth of his journalism.”

Judges said on Denholm’s work, “Matt’s work in 2011 is a stand out. It demonstrates the quality and depth that can be achieved if journalists are given adequate time and resources to do their job. In a challenging period for journalism, Matt shows the value of mainstream journalism by producing informed, verified, fair and beautifully crafted stories.”

Other winners on the night included The Mercury’s Hannah Martin, who was the recipient of two awards, Excellence in Investigative Reporting and Excellence in Science, Technology and Health.

Tim Martain continued The Mercury’s successful night by also winning two awards, Excellence in Diversity & Multicultural Reporting and Excellence in Arts Reporting.

Linda Hunt of the ABC was awarded Excellence in TV News Reporting and was also highly commended three times in the categories of Feature Writing, Environmental Reporting and Investigative Reporting

Chris Kidd of The Mercury won News Photographer, ABC News’ Edith Bevin was the recipient of Excellence in Legal Affairs Reporting and was also highly commended in TV News Reporting.

The Examiner’s Dinah Arndt won Excellence in Community Affairs Reporting, Brett Stubbs of the Mercury won the award for Excellence in Sports Journalism and Jonathan Gul from ABC News was the recipient of Best New Journalist.

On this year entrants A.Mark Thomas said, “Once again the overall quality from all the entrants in the Tasmanian media awards has been fantastic.”

The Tasmanian Media Awards are open to journalists who reside in Tasmania at the time of publication or broadcast. Their entry must also have been published, broadcast or televised through media outlets during the period from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011.
